Antibacterial activity in crude extracts of Austromegabalanus psittacus soft tissue, originating from 2 coastal localities in the north and south of Chile, was evaluated in 7 solvents. Antibacterial activity was determined using the disk diffusion method to test 7 bacterial strains (ATCC). Evidence of inhibition was found in Escherichia coli, Salmonella enteritidis, Staphylococcus aureus, Aeromonas hydrophila and Yersinia ruckeri, with high variability, depending on the solvent utilized. No differential patterns were recorded according to specimen origin. Results are discussed in terms of their potential application to the aquaculture and food industries.
